Raising Baby Green

Raising Baby Green

Are you looking to raise a “green baby“? While parents certainly don’t want to bring up a child with jaudice, there are a number of eco friendly options available when it comes to raising baby green.

Babies have exceptionally sensitive skin and very delicate immune systems so baby items need to be selected with care. ‘Most people understand that residues from everything you put onto skin can be absorbed into the bloodstream and may also be responsible for rashes or irritation,’ says Catherine Cervasio, founder of Aromababy. Petro chemically derived ingredients, such as mineral oil, are reported to reduce the skin’s ability to ‘breathe’. Cervasio suggests less frequent bathing, less use of commercial products and a more natural approach to personal hygiene for babies and children.

Organic and natural fabrics for clothing and bedding will expose baby to less harmful chemicals and dyes that could be potential allergens. Toys should also be made from natural materials such as wood and cloth. Plastics, while durable, are made from petrochemicals and can contain polyvinyl chloride which has been known to release potentially harmful fumes – you’d be amazed at just how much plastic your child is exposed to from birth.

Food is another area where sustainable, organic choices can be made. First and foremost, breast milk is one of the most nutritious and environmentally friendly foods for baby – just consider the elimination of packaging and food miles. Andrew Radford, from the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, estimates that if every baby in the US was bottle-fed, almost 86,000 tonnes of tin plate would be required for 550 million discarded formula tins. Formula must also be heated up in plastic bottles, which of course, uses more energy and resources. ‘A 3 month-old bottle-fed baby needs 1 litre of water a day for mixing feeds,’ Radford says.

Most parents find that they become much ‘cleaner’ and more conscious of germs when they have a young child. The temptation may be to bleach, sanitise and sterilise everything baby can get his hands on. Opt for natural cleaners such as bicarbonate soda and vinegar, they do an effective job and minimise the family’s exposure to harmful chemicals.

By taking the extra steps to choose a greener and more sustainable lifestyle from day one, your child can get off on the right foot to being more aware and environmentally conscious. Eco minded parents are most likely to pass their values and principles down to their children. While it seems cliché, children are the future and we will depend on them to continue our quest to protect the environment.

  6. I have introduced organic foods to my son since he was a wee lad.If we cannot do organic, we do all natural.

"nah,i think the whole organic food thing is a gimmick and not really any healthier. i'd rather save my money for more important things like paying for their education/college. i'll be green only when it overlaps with being cheap, and in that case really i'm just being green by accident"

How the heck is it a gimmick? do you honestly think that eating foods with growth hormones and pesticides is healthy? wow.So sad.

  7. always unplug any electrical items you arent using at that moment, use flourescent lightbulbs, turn off the water when you shave and let the conditioner in your hair sink in, turn off water while brushing your teeth, washing your face etc, dont use plastic bags at the grocery store, re-use brown bags for the groceries!!

  8. my dance skool did this song…amazing dance

  10. Congratulations on your new baby!!! I have a "Yellow-sided Green Cheek" (same thing, just subspecies or something) and he's really a cute little bird. There's really no trick to keeping them. Mine gets finch seed, topped off with parrot mix. I don't think this is neccessary, but I sprinkle a little "Zu-Preem" on top too. He gets a little fruit/veggies (usually1 or combinations of apple, grapes, banana, pc. of fig, etc.). All my birds go nuts for corn–I get frozen, then thaw under warm water as needed. Find out what the store recommends feeding him (or her!),& if they have started on adult diet. You don't ever want to switch any bird/animals diet too much/fast, or you'll get them sick. As for fruits/veggies, just give very little, especially to start, or will get diarrhea (& watch out..there's forbidden stuff too, like avocado, apple seed, etc.). Don't over do vitamins either. I give my birds them twice weekly. I have had many of my birds many years….a Rainbow Lory I've had since a baby…for over 25 years. There's probably not too much difference, but I use "Nekton" brand vitamins (put in water)…a pricier, good brand out of Europe, commonly available. The main thing would be to just do what the pet store instructs you to do for now…they sound good, ask them any questions. I've got a few toys hanging in his cage…does get playful. Here's a few things I found for you to hopefully help you:

  11. I don't know of any specific pediatricians that meet your criteria but here is a directory that lists pediatricians in California by city. These listings should tell you what each pediatrician specializes in and has contact info. Hope this helps.

  12. I think you should throw it out and buy a new one. You could kill the mold with clorox, but since you baby will probably, at some time, chew on the rail. I wouldn't risk it.

  13. luv this song

  14. Making your own baby food is a good one. That way your baby gets all the nutrition you get in mashed form. I use a KidCo food mill. You put the food in, crank the handle and baby eats what you eat for meals. It was a $13 investment that saved tons in baby food and you get to know exactly what baby gets.

Also instead of cloth diapers you could look into g-diapers. They have a website and are also sold at places like Whole Foods. They are a cross between a cloth and a disposable however instead of throwing away the diaper you flush a biodegradable insert down the toilet and wash out the outer shell. They have no pins and use velcro on the back so baby can't take off his or her own diaper.

And instead of wipes you could buy a box-o-rags that you re-use by cleaning with bleach or a natural cleaning agent (Shaklee makes a great one). You cut them into smaller pieces and dampen them when you have poopy diapers. They are usually recycled from old t-shirts so they aren't a rough fabric and very cost effective.

Getting fabrics that are made of soy, bamboo, or other natural replenishing fibers are not only safer but usually softer and last longer.

If you don't already have wood floors in your nursery, look for a demolition in your area of maybe a school, church or the like and ask about getting your wood from them. School gyms and churches usually have old wood floors full of charm and character and most often this stuff goes to the dump.

Buying wood toys (such as Melissa and Doug items) ensures your baby has child-safe yet fun, educational toys that aren't full of plastic and batteries.

One last thing I can think of. When storing baby food or breastmilk, buy cases of Mason jars. This eliminates the use of plastic ice cube trays (for freezing food), tupperware, and Saran wrap. The jars come in all sorts of sizes and are less expensive that Glad-ware in the long run.

  15. Wow. I guess I'm going to be the lone voice of dissent.

Have you read any etiquette books? It is NEVER appropriate to include registry information with an invitation! NEVER. And it is NEVER appropriate to write in the invitation that "the parents only want green gifts."

The people who are being invited to a baby shower should already know the parents well enough to know that they are environmentally conscientious. And, the people invited should be close family and friends. When the guests call you, or the baby's grandmothers, to ask about the registry or gift ideas, THEN it's appropriate to say "Susie and Brad have registered at Target. They're really interested in raising the baby using "green" products."

No matter what you tell people, no matter how many little cards get mailed out that say "the registry is," the guests are going to buy what they WANT to buy. Your sister's job, as the shower honoree, is to smile, say thank you, be gracious, write a lovely thank-you note, and then take back anything she won't use and exchange it without ever telling the guests that this is what she did.

Try Emily Post or Judith Martin for good etiquette guides.

  16. You cannot determine an iguana's sex until they are around 3 years old. When they are mature, the male becomes extremely aggressive and territorial for a few months in the spring. He will also have two large circles on his cheeks(one on each) and will have a larger, more robust looking head.

I want to breifly go over iguana care with you. First you need a cage that is at least 2' X 2' X 3'. Iguanas need exercise and room to roam about. I hope you plan on a log against the wall with an ultraviolet and heat lamp shining on it. These lizards will outgrow their cage by the age of 2 1/2. You need a ceramic heat lamp as well as a tropical flourescent light. They need a waterbowl large enough to bathe their entire bodies in. You wil be dusting all of their food with 2:1 Calcium phosphours. Feed them daily, and give them a mix of fresh greens with finely chopped veggies. I use spinach greens, collard greens, zucchihi squash, carrots, apple, bock choy, califlour, and mustard greens. Don't take them out of the cage very often either. They are more fit for handling, both physically and emotionally, when they are much older. Juvanile iguanas think that everying is going to eat them and handling them stresses them out a great deal. Give them a few years to get to know you, and it will be much easier to handle them.
    Gook luck!

  17. The first thing you have to do is get an immigration lawyer. Its best to call them over the phone so they won't charge you lawyer fees. Unless you want to make an appointment. The Green Card marriage fraud is a tedious process.Your sister has to hire a lawyer, submit evidences that her marriage is a fraud all in front of a judge, and get the marriage annulled. Her husband needs to appear in front of the judge also. Also, it costs a lot of money to hire the lawyer, pay lawyer fees etc..

Remember, you can help your sister but she has to make her own decisions since she was the one that agreed to marry the guy. So I suggest you talk to your sister, tell her the options, ask a lawyer. Hope this helps.

  18. brown eyes are usually dominant, but you may have one brown eyed gene and one gene of a different color, so your baby may not have inherited your brown-eyed gene.

I don't know what genes are required for green eyes, but the order your children are born in has nothing to do with what color their eyes are – all of your children may end up with green eyes :)

  19. Pastel colours will not work in that environment, the corporate work force has very much always been dominated by dark colours

  20. technically, they dont ever need to be in freshwater.. they CAN so they are sold that way..

if you're willing to acclimate him slowly enough you can make the move now..

over the next 2 weeks or so raise the SG of the tank by about .001 a day (depending what SG you started from, time is more important than the per day increments)

  21. i wrote this song

  22. Keep in mind that "proven pair" means they're proven to breed where they are currently located. They may be past their breeding prime and never lay for you. Or they could be well within their breeding prime and never lay for you anyway. Many a "proven pair" have been bought and later sold when they didn't reproduce.

  24. Sounds like a good idea

  25. ANDRE 3000 KILLED IT

  26. Hope it wouldn't be too alarmed at the sight of the rest of the family ;)

  27. Wow, I think that is plenty….
I sort of feel this 'going green' wave is just a big industry where a LOT of people are making a lot of money on stuff that it takes more energy to make in first place. If buy an ego friendly car it takes more energy to build that then if you just kept your old car (also the floors in your babies room – leave the one that is there because it takes more energy to build the earth friendly one)
My thought process is just try to be as natural as possible. Cloth diapers and using glass is a great start. Recycle and keep a compost bin and you will be doing your part.
We need to get all the rich celebrities to get rid of there 3, 4 air conditioned mansions before they ask us to give ours up.
    Anyway, just my thought.

  28. Yes I believe it. I have heard that an overused mattress can collect bacteria (from spit up, pee, drooling etc) and this can grow in the mattress and be a cause of SIDS

  29. Eventually, the clowns will kill each other off. Unless they are a mated pair, I would be wary of keeping them in the same tank. As for the anemone, they will take pretty much to any.

  30. They have the official ringtone for this song at FindAllTones. com check it out yall!

  34. If you want this cell tone I just got it at AnyTone4U. com ******

  35. Could the problem be that you are jealous of the attention they are getting and not really the fact that they are having a baby?? Especially since you have decided not to have children, it may be frustrating (and even down right tick you off) that these women are getting fussed over when all they're doing is having a kid.

To get over this, I suggest that every time you get frustrated with someone else's pregnancy, you go out and shop. While you are shopping think of how that pregnant woman wont be able to wear something cute like whatever you are buying. Or you and your husband go out to dinner and you think about how that woman is going to be spending less time eating a quiet meal with her husband and more time cleaning up a mess.

I hope I didn't offend you with that, I just thought I'd take a different approach to some of the answers. I think it is great that you and your husband have made that choice for the 2 of you. A lot of couples never discuss kids and end up with problems later because of a lack of communication.

Good luck with how you are feeling.

  36. ne one want this cell tone? I just got the official one at FindAllTones . com they have everything and they are complimentary!

  37. My baby is also due in June! Congrats!! I like the idea your daughter came up with. It is not only a cute name but she will also be able to tell her little brother she helped come up with it. Its a great way to start a bond!!!!

  38. What is your question? There is a spell check option if you are worried about correctly spelling words you do not know.

  39. Feed a baby praying mantis small crickets that can be purchased at a pet store. When it gets older they will eat larger crickets, but most prefer caterpillars. Beware of hairy caterpillars since they can be bad for it depending on which kind of praying mantis it is. To take care of it simply put three small drops of water in a bottle cap. Then squirt down the fishbowl with water every day.

  40. he can sing and he’s hot!

  41. Congrats on getting a feathered baby.
Spoon feeding vs syringe feeding. Either one works, the spoon feeding allows the baby to take the food at its own pace and there is less of a chance to get food in the birds lungs. Syringe feeding is less messy (sometimes), but it is easier to misdirect the food and to overfeed. Be careful not to get the food too warm as that can burn a hole through the skin of the crop. As long as the food is moving through the crop, it will empty the bottom first, so if there is still a little bit of food in and you are tired and want to go to bed, you can feed the night feeding. If you mix the formula a bit thicker at night, it will take it a bit longer to go through and last longer so you can sleep all night.
Heat: Either a heating pad or a heat lamp would work, I just used a night light bulb in a glass jelly jar in the box. The jar kept the bird from getting too close to the bulb and getting burned. Whichever you use, make sure the baby can move away from the source of heat in case it gets too hot and closer in case it gets too cold.
Housing. You can use a box of any kind as long as the baby cannot get out of it. I actually used a 10 gallon aquarium with a kleenex box for the bed in one end and the light in the jar for the heat set in the middle of the tank just outside the kleenex box. You can use kleenex or toilet paper, but the best is actually paper towels. Put several layers of paper towels in, then when you check on the baby, you can take off the top layer of dirty paper towel(s). It makes it faster than having to replace all of the bedding each time. Also, having the box in the tank will help to protect your bird from getting out of the bed and falling or getting too far from the warmth of the light. It also make it easier when the bird gets older to transition to real food. At that point, put newspaper in the bottom of the tank, leave the box with its paper towels in one end and put a food dish and a water dish in the other end. Once the baby has its feathers, you won't need the heat source anymore. You can replace it with a piece of wood or bark for your baby to practice perching on.
Normal food: As the baby grows, it will start to investigate its home with its beak. It will go through a "teething" stage where anything and everything will be beaked. This is the best time to introduce all sorts of new foods. The pellets and the seeds can be kept in a dish in the tank for constant access as should the water. You can also put a dish in with all sorts of cooked and raw veggies and fruits for your baby to try. I found the best way to get a bird to try something new is to let it see you eating it. My cockatiel would always try to taste whatever I was eating. Stay away from chocolate, avocado, and alcohol, and too much sugar or salt. Most fruits and veggies are good, cheese is ok in small amounts. Pasta and breads are ok. Boiled chicken is good in small amounts. Beans and lentils are ok too. Leafy greens such as romaine lettuce, parsley, and kale are good, broccolli, cauliflower, carrots, celery, bell pepper, tomatoes, apples, oranges, bananas, etc are all good. The pellets should be a "complete" diet on their own, but a variety of foods is more interesting and more healthy for the bird. The more different types of foods you can get your bird to try while it is young, the better.

  42. Dope Song!!! Check out my beats, they’re all free for download. =)

  43. het blijft een lekker nummer (l)

  44. Cool song. Check out my beats, you can download them for free.

  45. You shouldn't keep wild animals especially lizards as pets. It causes way to much stress. Having the hole world and then a tiny glass tank they have no idea what to do with. Most often they die from inproper care. If you want a pet lizard get one from a breeder or pet store. Let the babies go. If I can not convince you and you really WANT to keep them then search for images on yahoo or google or other search engine and look for baby green lizards then see what it is. I agree with the other answer that its a green anole but you can never be to sure. Here is a baby green anole http://www.mcmartinville.com/reptiles/trips/scarolina/anole.jpg

And here are more pictures of them
    http://images.google.com/images?q=Green+anole&gbv=2&svnum=10&hl=en

If that is the lizard then here is a care sheet (If you must keep it you may as well know how to take care of it properly so it might survive)
