Going Green Is Not Just For Big Business-You Can Grow Profits, Too!

Going Green Is Not Just For Big Business-You Can Grow Profits, Too!

The world of big business is making daily headlines by "going green" after discovering that what’s good for the planet is also proving good for business.

IBM recently announced "Project Big Green," a $1 billion initiative to reduce energy consumption by offering new lines of energy-efficient IT products.

Wal-Mart is adding solar power to more than 20 stores.

PepsiCo is buying renewable energy certificates to offset its carbon footprint. Even major banks and energy firms are being asked by shareholders to prove that they, too, are going green.

It’s not just the biggest businesses that are attracting new customers and shareholders and reaping huge profits by "going green." Small businesses also are growing eco-profits by embracing surprisingly inexpensive strategies to add value to their products, services and brand.

Consider these innovative examples:

- Bob Smith of Mad River Brewing Company in Blue Lake, California, has attracted positive publicity (and new customers) by promoting his efforts to reduce his small firm’s waste output and take other environmentally conscious steps. In turn, he has received welcome positive publicity from the press. "What PR budget? That is our PR budget," he told the Albuquerque Tribune about "going green" to market his business.

- In Florida, Natalie Kelly formed Home Therapy Cleaning Services, which uses only nontoxic, all-natural cleaning products for her home cleaning business. She used to sell aromatherapy candles from her home, she told the St. Petersburg Times, but today uses an aromatherapy baking soda blend to freshen carpets.

Here’s what you can do:

- Two inexpensive ways any small business or solo entrepreneur can go green are to change light bulbs to energy-efficient bulbs and use biodegradable cleaning products.

- With that done, tell your customers and the media about these simple ways to go green. You will have just earned instant credibility as a green business, and also as a media resource for simple, effective ways to "go green."

- Many communities online and offline are forming networks to exchange energy-saving ideas for home and business. Form your own energy network, enlisting neighborhood businesses that will welcome another opportunity to show they’re going green, too. The plus for you is that you will have just positioned yourself and your business as a community environmental leader.

- Copy what the New York Times called "Phase 2" of the corporate response to global warming. Partner with an environmental group. Travelocity invites customers to donate an extra $10 to $40, which goes to the Conservation Fund to plant trees to offset the carbon used by a client to take a trip. Whole Foods invites customers to buy a $5 "wind power card" that goes to Renewable Choice Energy to build wind farms. What local environmental group can you partner with to promote on your Web site (and vice versa), to set aside a day that a percentage of profits will go to that organization or to make their fliers available at your business?

- Make use of readily available, free information to hand out with your business literature or to make available in your office. For example, create a one-page flier on your letterhead inviting clients to calculate their own carbon footprint by visiting http://multimedia.wri.org/safeclimate_calculator.cfm.

- Go deeper green! Attend a "green" conference in your community or region, and promote your attendance. (Go to Google.com and type in "green" and "conference" and your area to find out when and where they are scheduled.) Write a "green" article on simple ways you are going green and submit it to one of the dozens of "green" Web sites and blogs that invite reader contributions. It’s a great way to market your smart ideas and your business!

  8. Peppers are a tender, warm-season vegetable. They grow best when temperatures are warm, though they still are slower to grow and are smaller than most tomato plants.

These plants cannot tolerate frost and do not grow well in cold, wet soil. When night temperatures are below 50° to 55°F, the plants grow slowly, the leaves may turn yellow and the flowers drop off. Raised beds, black plastic mulch and floating row covers may be used to advantage with peppers to warm and drain the soil and enhance the microenvironment of the young pepper plants in spring, when cool weather may persist.

Peppers thrive in a well-drained, fertile soil that is well supplied with moisture. Use a starter fertilizer when transplanting. Apply supplemental fertilizer (side-dressing) after the first flush of peppers is set. Mircale Grow Tomato Plant Foot is a fine product to side dress peppers. Because a uniform moisture supply is essential with peppers, especially during the harvest season, irrigate during dry periods. Hot, dry winds and dry soil may prevent fruit set or cause abortion of small immature fruits. Peppers, like all plants produce their own food. Nutrients supplied by mineral soils, compost and side dressing are needed by plants to produce their own food. A plant will only absorb nutrients at the rate needed by the plant. Other than Nitrogen, growth rate is more a function of genetics and weather. It's likes kids, we can not make them grow faster than their genetics allow, but by providing the nutrients they need we can issue that thier diet is not limiting their growth. Stimulating excessive green growth with high amounts of nitrogen fertilizes invites insect infestations and disease.

  9. For bodybuilders, it offers all of these benefits and more. Green tea's ingredient EGCG actually increases exercise capacity by allowing for greater utilization of fatty acids which server as a source of energy during intense workouts. Additionally, green tea can also lead to weight loss. Green tea consumption results in a 24-hour window of increased respiratory ability, which leads to better oxidation performance of the body.

  17. The green dot is to designate the helmet with the radio in it for communication with the sideline. There is only one allowed on the field at a time, so the dot is there so the refs know who it is. It is NOT required by rule to be the quarterback.

Also note that the helmet does not have a microphone in it, so communication is one-way only. By league rule, the communication is cut at a certain point (At the snap of the ball at the latest) so the sideline can't say anything while the play is in progress.

A defensive player will also have the communication helmet too (usually a middle linebacker).

  30. Use french cut frozen green beans. Canned french cut ones work OK too, but I think the frozen ones have better flavor and more vitamins.

It also helps if the casserole is kept covered (with a lid, or foil) until the last 10 minutes. Keeping it covered for most of the cooking time prevents the beans from getting too dry!

And removing the cover at the end allows it to brown properly on top. :)

    – Prep Time: 7 minutes
    – Cooking Time: 35 minutes

1 bag (16 ounces) frozen French cut green beans

1 can (8 ounces) La Choy Sliced Water Chestnuts, or 8 oz slivered almonds.

  31. I’m from New Mexico and Green Chile here is serious business.
You need to freeze your chile.

Roast the whole peppers over an open flame or under the oven broiler until the skin on all sides is black and blistered. Put the roasted peppers into a bowl and cover with a damp towel. Once all your chile is roasted, you can either bag it whole and unpeeled or you can peel it, chop it and freeze it. If you freeze it whole, you will need to peel it when you use it. Either way works fine, one is just a little more work up front.

Roasting the chile on a gas grill or even a charcoal fire works very well, or over a burner on a gas stove, no pan needed, just hold the chile in the flame.

Around where I live, the scent of roasting chile in the air is a signal of late summer and fall. Absolutely divine.

  32. as far as I know, there are no tea manufacturers that add food coloring to their tea. The term green tea does not mean the tea will be green. Green is a term used to distinguish the type of tea it is and the level of oxidation that the tea leaves have been subjected to.

Green tea has been shown to prevent some illnesses and boosts your metabolism very slightly. It's also has a relaxing calming effect on your body.

  33. Ain’t it a shame. However, I had rather pay a ridiculous price for a ticket if the show is inside and the crowd a little bit less loud.

  34. i'd say probably a dark forest green or possibly a bluish teal color would be good too :]

  35. ahh the good old days when people sang, played instruments and dialected in jive and not the ubiquitous hip hop vernacular.

  36. I live in Portland, OR, and Rev. Green will be appearing here for a show ON MY BIRTHDAY in August! The shame of it is, ticket prices will be beyond ridiculous. But maybe I can start mining the house for things to sell so I can see the man, LIVE. I can’t imagine what a fantastic show that will be!

  37. It's the same thing. It also is known as benzaldehyde green and aniline green.

  38. Green tea is healthy plain. The milk and sugar won't cancel green tea's benefits, they just add their own problems (sugar isn't good & milk has fat). 3 tsp. of sugar is a lot for a cup of tea.

The cinnamon is fine, as long as it's pure, not mixed with sugar. Cinnamon is also healthy.

Try things like honey instead of sugar. Honey is a healthier food. It's not better than sugar for a diet or diabetes, but it has its own health advantages (and sugar has none). Lemon is a great addition to tea for flavor.

  39. With the dk green you can go two ways white for accent, and a pale yellow, with oranges or rust colors. For the lime green, white, turquoise yellow or grays.

  40. If that is the color you like, then go for it!!! If you like it, it will be relaxing. If your instincts say to paint it caterpillar green and you enjoy the color, then just do it! :)

  41. first sign of spring is when the local farmers ( who grow truck crops) start plowing…that's in late feb.
Early march sees them planting cabbage and lettuce, and the daffodils come up and bloom.
trees start budding around the same time
Forsythia blooms in late march early april.

  42. Pretty much the same way as any citizen. the primary difference is the time frame. since you're currently a green card holder, the petition you filed for your husband falls into the F2a family preference category, and those take about 5 years from the time they are filed before they are valid for use. Of course, if you become a citizen while you're waiting, the petition would be upgraded to an IR-1 petition and that would be valid immediately. if that happens, be sure to tell USCIS about your petition as they won't go looking for it unless you do.

When your petition gets closer to being valid, you'll be contacted by the National Visa Center for an Affidavit of Support. then, it will be sent out to the embassy or consulate handling immigrant visas where your husband lives. but for now, you're in for a long wait.

  43. I have the same eyes :)
I usually just wear green eyeshadows to bring the colour out, try the Almay trio for greens, that's great.
Also try purple eyeliners since purples make green eyes pop.

  44. that’s classic G-Style, No Doubt..
he Was One Of The Best!!..

  45. Yes the green part of it is where we get scallions. Quite a few foods we eat we'd be surprised what & how they grow. Technically an onion that we eat is just a bulb (seed) like you'd see when planting certain flowers & carrots are technically the roots of a plant. No need to worry about the green part, you're safe as long as it's not a wild onion like what some people randomly find in their yard.

  46. 3-4 servings after that metabolism benifit are wasted

  47. Not sure but I think it is made from the stuff Kitty litter is made from, only finer. they use kitty litter to absorb oil spills and it does a great job. maybe they recycle that as it works as a dust magnet. just a theory.
