There have already been numerous studies that prove that green tea helps protect drinkers against cancer. Statistics show that cancer rates are lower in countries where people regularly drink green tea. Research has shown that polyphenols are one source of the health benefit of green tea. Researchers believe that these substances found in green tea are influential in preventing the development of cancer.

Studies involving animal tests have shown that green tea reduces the formation of tumors for cancers of the skin, esophagus, bladder, pancreas, ovary cancer and prostate. The antioxidant activity in green tea has

been reported to produce such results. Researchers are also of the belief that polyphenols are essential in destroying cancerous cells and stopping their progression.

Skin Cancer

Scientific research suggests that the main polyphenol in green tea, which is called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and other green tea polyphenols possess anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. One study

has been done on the health benefit of green tea on the skin. The study showed that drinking tea helps prevent the onset and growth of skin tumors.

Esophageal Cancer

Animal studies have also been conducted and they showed that green tea polyphenols help stop the growth of esophageal cancer cells. However, studies done on people have various results regarding the health

benefit of green tea. One study showed that green tea consumption is an effective way to be protected from esophageal cancer, specifically among women. But another study showed that drinking green tea increased

the risk of developing esophageal cancer. This shows that before green tea can be recommended for esophageal cancer prevention, more research has to be done.

Bladder Cancer

A few studies have been conducted on the health benefit of green tea on the human bladder. Research has been done to determine if there’s a connection between bladder cancer and consumption of green tea. One

study revealed that women who drank green tea reduced their probability of developing bladder cancer. The study was followed with another one revealing that patients with bladder cancer, specifically men, who

consumed green tea had a significantly improved chance of surviving compared to those who did not drink tea.

Pancreatic Cancer

Research has also been done on the health benefit of green tea on the pancreas. A study found that men and women who drank green tea had lesser chances of developing cancer in the pancreas. However, the study

didn’t particularly point out that green tea was exclusively responsible for reducing the risk of pancreatic cancer. Researchers still need further studies before they can start recommending green tea for pancreatic

cancer prevention.

Ovarian Cancer

In China, a study was conducted on patients with ovarian cancer. It was observed that women who drank a cup of green tea a day were able to survive longer and lived the longest compared to women who did not drink

tea at all.

Prostate Cancer

Green tea extracts have been shown in laboratory studies to prevent the development of prostate cancer cells in test tubes. A large study showed that people who drank green tea with increasing frequency, quantity

and duration reduced their risk of developing prostate cancer.

When it comes to making a change in your life, and deciding that you want to ‘go green’, then a green forum is an excellent place to begin.

It is difficult to know where to start. We all know that we should be making a concerted effort to save energy, and eat food produced in a fashion that protects the environment. The question is where is all the information to start to make a positive change? Well, over the last few years there has been a large increase in the number of ‘go green’ focused websites. These sites are portals for consumers to leave information about any experiences they have had in becoming more friendly to the environment.

So called ‘Green Forums’ are usually free to join, and they can have thousands of useful tips for local and global issues. Making a change in our life means starting the change from home, and these forums give us all a chance to find out what we would maybe never have learned otherwise. Tips on the house and home and how to saving energy is a very big subject, and there is plenty of information to be found.

Other areas to help the environment include new fuels and fuel technology, including how and where to fill up a car running on a hydrogen cell, or how to get information on running and electric vehicle.

Solar panels for the home are quite a new trend, and there are many unanswered questions about this topic. Using a green forum lets you see the experiences of others in the same situation, and see any pitfalls and advantages before you decide on how to proceed.

A great green wedding

Dressed in white can have a green twist. There are a number of ways to make your perfect day as environmentally friendly as possible. Here are some important ideas to consider for a great green wedding:

Invitations - everyone knows that the right paper stock is one of the most important decisions you can make when it comes to pre wedding day planning. But instead of going for a heavy card stock with environmentally damaging gloss or matte, consider if you need to have paper invitations at all!

Many wedding websites have sprung up to allow couples to plan their day and give guests all the information they need in paper saving electronic format. Couples can upload photos, tell their special story and direct guests to their registry on line. Many also have an RSVP feature so you can manage your list with a few clicks of the mouse. You and your mother can argue over background colours and menu patterns to your hearts ‘content!

Dress – The right dress makes the memories. That doesn’t mean you need to spend a small fortune (not to mention create a heavy environmental cost) with a tailor made piece that will just sit in your wardrobe for years to come. Consider vintage pieces or family pieces, there is nothing more sentimental to your mother, than walking down the aisle in same dress she wore back in the day. (You can tailor and amend it to suit your own taste and fashion of course!) Meanwhile, some companies create beautiful custom made pieces from sustainable fabrics , such as hemp, bamboo or organic cotton. Some even “upcycle” older gowns.

Gifts – Do you really want to face the possibility of ending up with two chip dippers or a variety of toasters that you’ll have some trouble returning? You can use your special day to promote some well deserving charities and eco causes. Ask your guests to make a donation to your favourite in lieu of presents, then you can be sure you’re getting the exact model of kettle you want!

Flowers – Consider the season when picking your flower arrangements. Out of season arrangements are often shipped from overseas adding to miles and emissions. There are also a number of issues regarding the ethics of the cut flower industry, with many sources citing cheap labour and unfair work conditions. Australia is abundant with beautiful species of wattles, banksias and colourful kangaroo paws for a truly unique look. Better yet, go organic!

Food – Organic caterers are all the rage. They provide some of the best food that you know is pesticide free and delightfully delicious. Look for a baker that uses organic eggs and flour and other sustainable ingredients.

Venue and transport – Pick a venue that’s easy to get to and encourage your guests to carpool, or better yet, provide some shuttle bus transport yourself. Having the reception in the same place as the ceremony also cuts down on travel and emissions.

Rings – Eco is a girl’s best friend. Lots of great companies “up cycle” jewellery from older pieces. Take in an old family heirloom and have it recrafted to create your own one of a kind piece.

Autumn is approaching and that means colder days ahead. However, Australia is blessed with an amazingly moderate climate where even our chilliest days are nothing compared to other regions in the world. This means that Australian residents can take advantage of all natural low emissions heating in their green home.

As well as insulation and energy efficiency, there are other innovative heating ideas to keep your home toasty warm for the winter.

Eco Home Tip #31 – Seal up draughts – Put snakes under door jambs, get weather stripping for your windows. Heavy curtains also help keep in the heat and keep out the cold. You’ll be amazed at how cosy a room can be without any heating at all.

Eco Home Tip #32 – Look beneath your feet – the soil beneath you home acts as a natural insulator, keeping the ground warm all year round. By employing a geothermal heat pump, your home can be take advantage of this natural heat during the colder months. In a geothermal system, liquid is circulated in pupes that run beneath your home. As the liquid gets warmer, it is pumped up to a heat condensor where the heat is released into your central heating system.

Eco Home Tip #33 – Keep it low – Switch your thermostat down a single degree. When we come in from the cold, we’re very likely to crank the termostat up much higher than necessary. Remember that every degree lower on your thermostat can potentially save up to 10 per cent on your heating. Throw on a jumper instead.

Eco Home Tip #34 – Cut your system down to size – as with air conditioning, don’t go overboard with your heating. You’ll be amazed at what a single space heater will do.

Eco Home Tip #35 – Look for the Energy Star – As with all appliances, energy star ratings give a good indication of the energy efficiency of the appliance. Energy star rates furnaces, boilers and heat pumps for central heating in your home.

For more green ideas for your eco home, visit the Green Pages at www.thegreenpages.com.au

According to the Australian Burean of Statistics, around 56 per cent of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions are generated from the home. While it is important that we pressure business and government for sustainable initiatives, some of the easiest changes can be made in our own dwellings. From simple lifestyle changes such as adopting the Green Pages Top 50 tips to a more substantial investment in your home’s design features.

For many, building a sustainable home may seem too challenging, too daunting or just not feasible. Many people claim ‘we can’t afford it’, ‘I already own a home (and am still paying it off!)’, or ‘I’m renting’; these are all ready made excuses that make even the most die-hard greenie resistant to making a more substantial investment in a sustainable home.

‘Money is always one of the major impediments to investing in a sustainable home,’ says Julien Laclave, renewable energy promotions officer for Australian and New Zealand Solar Energy Society (ANZES). A green home can save a family thousands of dollars a year. ‘We can’t force people to invest in a sustainable renovation or a new home, but we can show them that it really pays off.’ Reduced energy bills from renewable energy sources and more comfortable living conditions that don’t require artificial heating or cooling are just some of the benefits of a sustainably designed home.

Lacave is also the project manager of the ANZES Sustainable House Day, a nationwide event that showcases a number of sutainable homes to the public. This year, over 100 homes were on diplsay and visitors could speak directly with the owners and get first hand information about the home and its sustinable features. Lacave finds taht many attendees come to sources ideas for their own projects. ‘People who visit the homes find it very inspiring. It’s very unique to be able to talk wiht the residents,’ he says.
So what’s behind good green design?

Essentially, building a ‘green home’ is to ensure a house is as ’self sustaining’ as possible. Key features include minimising energy use, rainwater harvesting, managing waste water disposal and even sustaining its inhabitants with a lush green garden. Renowned celebrities such as Csate Blanchett have brough popularity to green residences. Sustainable home design is reaching the mainstream. People are realising eco homes make good sense. Households can lower their energy bills by as much as 50 per cent and save on their water bills. Green homes stay comfortable throughout the year without the aid of artificial heating and cooling, which make them a real pleasure to live in. ‘A sustainable house is just a house that is well designed and cleverly thought out’, says Lacave.

Benefits of Drinking Green Tea

Green tea drink is the new trend of the modern times to stay healthy. Green Tea extracts like the EGCG and other flavonoids have several health benefits it stimulates and enhances state of logical thinking & improve our memory. Green Tea reduces fatigue and promotes our body metabolism. Helps to prevent tooth decay, as it has the tannin extracts that acts on the germs in the mouth. It has plenty of trace elements like –Zinc, Copper in tea which is valuable for our body.

Green Tea is known for its effects on different types of Cancer. It has been clinically proved that it has a great effect on the cancer cells categorically:

Prostate Cancer

A batch of South-East China researchers found that the prostate cancer cells fail to grow when they are kept in green tea extracts. The risk of prostate cancer can be diminished by 60 % if someone consumes Green Tea for a long duration. But it also has been found that the sensitivity of the chemotherapy is diminished if one consumes green tea. Thus, if you are under chemotherapy don’t have any Green Tea.

Skin Cancer

The Green Tea has a polyphenol called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). It is very effective to stop the onset or growth of skin cancer or tumor. ECGC has anti- inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.

Bladder Cancer

It has been revealed by substantial studies that the green tea can reduce the possibility to develop bladder cancer. Specially in women the consumption of black tea or organic green tea powder reduced the possibility bladder cancer. Even for people with bladder cancer, especially men, green tea can be expected to increase their survival rate by five years.

Breast Cancer

The most common cancer amongst women can also be prevented by the consumption of green tea. The polyphenol content of green tea can reduce the possibility of occurrence of breast cancer. In the early stages of this breast cancer if someone consumes green tea can decrease the spread of it by a considerable rate. In a study of 472 women at different stages of breast cancer it was discovered that the women with the consumption of green tea had the least spread cancer (especially pre-menopausal women in the early stages). After the completion of the treatment of breast cancer if one consumes 5 cups of green tea, the person would have the least chance recurrence of the cancer. Well why worry if you can prevent the occurrence itself by the consumption of the green tea.

Ovarian Cancer

One of the most dreadful type of cancer is this one. The women suffering from this tend to loose hope very early, but there is hope in consumption of green tea. Well a study in China reflected that the women with this cancer survived longer with the consumption of the green tea. In fact the women with the highest consumption survived the longest. Now you can wonder why goby that stats if we can prevent that by the consumption of this amazing age-old herb.

Colorectal Cancer

In a research in Japan it is revealed that people with rectal cancer, who consume green tea have noticed a decline in the spread of the cancer. People, who treated it in the first stage itself, noticed that the recurrence percentage is diminished to 0% with the consumption of green tea.

Esophageal Cancer

Esophageal cancer is very common in the sub continent. People who consume tobacco and its by product are prone to this. Well the toxins of tobacco are highly infectious but the researches have shown that the consumption of green tea can diminish the effect of the toxins to a very considerable amount. Green tea works wonders in the case of women who suffer from the esophageal cancer. Esophageal cancer once treated has a high percentage of recurrence. Green tea not only decreases the spread but also the recurrence after treatment of this cancer.

Lung cancer

The most common cancer of all is Lung Cancer. Well people who have lung cancer can really rely on the consumption of the green tea because green tea has ECGC, a polyphenol which has anti-inflammatory effects on cancer cells. Since in lung cancer the bronchioles are affected the most and in contact of polluted air they have the property inflaming and multiplying at rigorous rate. The multiplicity of the cells can be diminished simply by the consumption of green tea along with some restricted diet chart.

Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer because it is caused by bad eating habits. Everyone from a commoner to a high-profile person can suffer by this cancer. Green tea and its supplements have a remarkable effect on the cancer cells in this case. If someone can avoid contaminated and spicy food, along with green tea consumption one can surely tackle this cancer even without medication.

Green Tea is helpful to prevents cell aging or enhances cell regeneration, and contributes to healthier and longer life. One of the benefits of green tea extract helps enhance the rate of athletic activity, as it stimulates the central nervous system; the tannic acid content of green tea extract that helps to kill wide range of bacteria inside our mouth, therefore helps to prevent stomatitis, pharyngitis, as well as enteritis, dysentery that are more prone to occur in summer season. Green Tea Extracts are exemplary for the overall health of a person.

Apart from these, the green tea drink also helps in maintaining a good glowing and healthy skin. Green tea extracts are noteworthy in maintaining a wrinkle free skin without any acne. The studies reveal that Green Tea extract is as effective as a 4% solution of Benzoyl Peroxide. A study by American Academy of dermatology reveals that when compounded into a cream base green tea extracts is far more effective on a regular skin than any other acne preventive. It was noticed that when the patients took green tea along with the application of green tea extract externally achieved almost a zero blemish skin without even a single mark on it. It must be kept in mind that acne and pimple are much more than a superficial skin disorder it may have its root in your metabolism and digestion. Green Tea as mentioned above is very effective in boosting the digestion and the metabolism as a whole.

The most important aspect of drinking green tea is that it helps to lose weight without any side effects. Green tea extract called EGCG boosts the metabolism rate; this would convert the fat globules to the ATP molecules. Green Tea also triggers the thermogenesis process to burn the fat that was accumulated near the tummy. Green Tea also acts as an appetite suppressor, which harnesses your crave to eat more. EGCG is a well known for its effect in the blood sugar levels. The Green Tea firstly acts on pancreas, specially the islets of Langerhans which are responsible for the secretion of the enzyme called insulin. The blood sugar levels are lowered to diminish the risk of type1 Diabetes.

The green tea can also help to lower the LDL levels thus, substantially lowers the risk of heart disease. So. Green tea Diet is recommended highly by the doctors for a overall health.

Are you looking to raise a “green baby“? While parents certainly don’t want to bring up a child with jaudice, there are a number of eco friendly options available when it comes to raising baby green.

Babies have exceptionally sensitive skin and very delicate immune systems so baby items need to be selected with care. ‘Most people understand that residues from everything you put onto skin can be absorbed into the bloodstream and may also be responsible for rashes or irritation,’ says Catherine Cervasio, founder of Aromababy. Petro chemically derived ingredients, such as mineral oil, are reported to reduce the skin’s ability to ‘breathe’. Cervasio suggests less frequent bathing, less use of commercial products and a more natural approach to personal hygiene for babies and children.

Organic and natural fabrics for clothing and bedding will expose baby to less harmful chemicals and dyes that could be potential allergens. Toys should also be made from natural materials such as wood and cloth. Plastics, while durable, are made from petrochemicals and can contain polyvinyl chloride which has been known to release potentially harmful fumes – you’d be amazed at just how much plastic your child is exposed to from birth.

Food is another area where sustainable, organic choices can be made. First and foremost, breast milk is one of the most nutritious and environmentally friendly foods for baby – just consider the elimination of packaging and food miles. Andrew Radford, from the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, estimates that if every baby in the US was bottle-fed, almost 86,000 tonnes of tin plate would be required for 550 million discarded formula tins. Formula must also be heated up in plastic bottles, which of course, uses more energy and resources. ‘A 3 month-old bottle-fed baby needs 1 litre of water a day for mixing feeds,’ Radford says.

Most parents find that they become much ‘cleaner’ and more conscious of germs when they have a young child. The temptation may be to bleach, sanitise and sterilise everything baby can get his hands on. Opt for natural cleaners such as bicarbonate soda and vinegar, they do an effective job and minimise the family’s exposure to harmful chemicals.

By taking the extra steps to choose a greener and more sustainable lifestyle from day one, your child can get off on the right foot to being more aware and environmentally conscious. Eco minded parents are most likely to pass their values and principles down to their children. While it seems cliché, children are the future and we will depend on them to continue our quest to protect the environment.

Look for more eco friendly and green baby products on the Green Pages green directory.

After all, who are we really saving the planet for?

The world of big business is making daily headlines by "going green" after discovering that what’s good for the planet is also proving good for business.

IBM recently announced "Project Big Green," a $1 billion initiative to reduce energy consumption by offering new lines of energy-efficient IT products.

Wal-Mart is adding solar power to more than 20 stores.

PepsiCo is buying renewable energy certificates to offset its carbon footprint. Even major banks and energy firms are being asked by shareholders to prove that they, too, are going green.

It’s not just the biggest businesses that are attracting new customers and shareholders and reaping huge profits by "going green." Small businesses also are growing eco-profits by embracing surprisingly inexpensive strategies to add value to their products, services and brand.

Consider these innovative examples:

- Bob Smith of Mad River Brewing Company in Blue Lake, California, has attracted positive publicity (and new customers) by promoting his efforts to reduce his small firm’s waste output and take other environmentally conscious steps. In turn, he has received welcome positive publicity from the press. "What PR budget? That is our PR budget," he told the Albuquerque Tribune about "going green" to market his business.

- In Florida, Natalie Kelly formed Home Therapy Cleaning Services, which uses only nontoxic, all-natural cleaning products for her home cleaning business. She used to sell aromatherapy candles from her home, she told the St. Petersburg Times, but today uses an aromatherapy baking soda blend to freshen carpets.

Here’s what you can do:

- Two inexpensive ways any small business or solo entrepreneur can go green are to change light bulbs to energy-efficient bulbs and use biodegradable cleaning products.

- With that done, tell your customers and the media about these simple ways to go green. You will have just earned instant credibility as a green business, and also as a media resource for simple, effective ways to "go green."

- Many communities online and offline are forming networks to exchange energy-saving ideas for home and business. Form your own energy network, enlisting neighborhood businesses that will welcome another opportunity to show they’re going green, too. The plus for you is that you will have just positioned yourself and your business as a community environmental leader.

- Copy what the New York Times called "Phase 2" of the corporate response to global warming. Partner with an environmental group. Travelocity invites customers to donate an extra $10 to $40, which goes to the Conservation Fund to plant trees to offset the carbon used by a client to take a trip. Whole Foods invites customers to buy a $5 "wind power card" that goes to Renewable Choice Energy to build wind farms. What local environmental group can you partner with to promote on your Web site (and vice versa), to set aside a day that a percentage of profits will go to that organization or to make their fliers available at your business?

- Make use of readily available, free information to hand out with your business literature or to make available in your office. For example, create a one-page flier on your letterhead inviting clients to calculate their own carbon footprint by visiting http://multimedia.wri.org/safeclimate_calculator.cfm.

- Go deeper green! Attend a "green" conference in your community or region, and promote your attendance. (Go to Google.com and type in "green" and "conference" and your area to find out when and where they are scheduled.) Write a "green" article on simple ways you are going green and submit it to one of the dozens of "green" Web sites and blogs that invite reader contributions. It’s a great way to market your smart ideas and your business!

When it comes to the green home, ratings matter. There are a number of eco certification for home based appliances and white goods. Plus you can get your home professionally assessed for energy efficiency.

Residential homes can be given a rating based on the National House Energy Rating (NatHERS) which is an index of the home’s thermal performance. It is done through a professional analysis by a qualified assessor working in conjunction with the builder of the home. NatHERS provides a baseline for assessment software to rate a home’s energy efficiency potential. Most homes in Australia currently fall below a 5 star rating, but the current tool has now been adapted to allow for a potential 10 star rating (which would be equivalent to zero conditioning energy). This system is based purely on the home’s infrastructure and does not include appliances or hot water systems. Find out more about energy ratings for your home.

Good insulation is a key feature in any energy efficient home. And homeowners are keen to take advantage of Kevin Rudd’s important announcement last week, with funds for ceiling insulation becoming available from the federal government. The Federal Government will be providing eligible homes wiht free ceiling insulation worth $1600. Landlords and renters can benefit too with rental properties being included in the package.

Yet with all the available insulation out there, which one should we consider?

Eco Home Tip #16 – Ask about the R value – the measure for insulation materials is the R value. A high R value means better insulation potential. For example, Pink Batts offers a range ceiling insulation products that have an R value of up to 6.0.

Eco Home Tip #17 – Natural insulation – Take your insulation innovation even further and look for ceiling insulation made from sustainable materials, such as Goldenfleece wool insulation. All natural wool fibre has great insulating properties, with the CSIRO claiming, “wool insulation performs better because of it’s ability to rapidly absorb and desorb moisture from the air.” And you’ll be helping out the rural farmers!

Eco Home Tip #18 – DIY insulation – there are lots of simple insulating ideas homeowners can adapt to protect their homes against the elements. Seal draughts with door snakes or hang some thick curtains on your windows to keep out the coming cold.

Insulation is the first step to a great energy efficient home that will save you money. Well designed homes that incorporate insulation, thermal mass design and sustainable energy alternatives, such as solar panels, can save some homeowners up to 50% on their annual energy consumption. Plus you get to enjoy the comfort of having a pleasant living environment year round.

Five advantages of going Certified Organic:
1. Beneficial to the Soil – Organic systems use a modern yet scientific knowledge of ecology and soil science, while using traditional techniques of crop rotations to provide fertility, weed as well as pest control.
2. Beneficial to the Environment – Organic systems try to lessen usage of non-renewable resources. Organic production tries all the while to provide sustenance and supports the optimum handling of the environment and wildlife as a precedence.
3. Beneficial to People – Organic products have been proven to possess more vitamins, nutrients and cancer-combating antioxidants as compared to non-organic products.
4. Absence of artificial Chemicals – Organic products ban using the synthetic chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers.
5. Absence of GMOs – Certified Organic products do not GMOs (genetically modified organisms), as they are banned as per standards laid down for organic food and farming. You can buy something that claims organic or natural but if there is no certified organic label they can use genetically modified components.
